Crossrail Hoardings

Client: Crossrail
Sector: Construction
Services: Install, Print

The Crossrail project is a multi site construction venture to build nine new train stations using multiple contractors across London, due for completion in 2019. It is London’s  largest rail construction project since the extension of the Jubilee Line in 1999, involving over 230 suppliers in London alone. Crossrail are building new stations at Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Whitechapel, Canary Wharf, Customs House and Woolwich.

In 2011 PressOn were awarded the contract to supply printed durable hoardings to promote Crossrail to passers-by through branded panels and to also cover views of unsightly construction sites throughout London.

Hoardings – materials and installation

To date we have printed and installed 2,000 metres of branded Crossrail hoardings, printed in a range of designs, from a “foliage and hedge” hoarding design through to information panels detailing the work at each site. Each installation of hoardings covers long uninterrupted runs, so colour consistency in all of the print is essential.

Crossrail demands that all materials used have a life span of at least five years. Replacement of these hoardings requires complex road closures and is not an option that can be undertaken regularly.

We identified a 3mm aluminium composite board as the most suitable base material and opted for a “print and mount” application in order to offer Crossrail a guaranteed product longevity. We applied an anti-graffiti polymer laminate to all panels to avoid vandalism risks and to increase their lifespan to five years. The boards were printed on our HP Latex 3000 capable of printing at speeds of 120m2/hr.

Instillation of the hoardings must comply with Crossrail’s very stringent ‘on site’ health and safety regulations. The coordination of the hoarding installation with Crossrails’ construction teams, often requires road closures in Central London. There is no room for error in this situation. Our highly qualified installation team work throughout the night and at weekends to ensure all projects hit Crossrail’s tight deadlines.
